Interview with WPRI on FAA Registration Deadline

Had a great opportunity to meet with and be interviewed by Susan Campbell from WPRI. The subject was what do I think about the soon approaching deadline for the FAA Drone Registration.

I had a lot to say on the subject, instead, catch the interview which is airing Monday, February 15 at 5:45. I wanted to focus on the space I secured to do the interview at. I contacted a friend of a friend and got access to Wide World of Indoor Sports. I had noticed this location when my daughter was playing field hockey there. The unique feature I noticed was that all the interior surfaces of the building were covered with a strong netting material. This would prove awesome to “catch” a drone and prevent any damage. In addition to this… a second floor observation deck had plenty of seating and also included a full bar. Here is a pic of Susan, Less and Myself.

Here is a video of testing the netting. I took a drone and full speed flew into the netting. Neither the drone nor the netting suffered any damage.

Makrbus’s Stepcraft 300 build and first part

We recived the Stepcraft 300 and built it.

First 3D surface in wood. This thing is awesome.

Now… to cut some Aluminum. I drew a part in vCarve for my drone ( a motor extension) and broke a lot of bits understanding how to set the feed and speed and chip collection. Here is an example of one of those bits breaking.

One more closeup with some chips flying. Current cutting is done with the vacum turned on and the “brush collector”.

Designed and made some hold downs on the Bridgeport, put the dust collector on and away we go. Works great. Next project, add a mister and specialized bits and start cutting carbon fiber.

Stepcraft CNC positioning system

Recently became an affiliate for a product that made its way into the US via a Kickstarter last year. The companies name is Stepcraft and they are based in Germany. They have been selling products in Europe for about 3 years now prior to making an entry into the US market.

The person responsible for the US market presence is Erick Royer from http://www.stepcraft.us.

I went to visit Erick in CT before I bought a machine to see what made it special and how they were able to hit the price point. I found a number of unique and clever features so I purchased the smallest unit thinking it would be ideal for demonstration purposes.

The most distingushing feature of the Stepcraft machine is the fact that it is not one machine. It truly is a CNC positioning system that then allows the user to postion a number of different tools to perform a number of different processes. Fancy way of saying its multiple tools in one. At the moment it can be a Mill, 3D printer, Laser cutter, Foam board cutter,  thin stock (vinyl) cutter and whatever other type of tool the user can imagine.

So below are some photos of some of the initial work i have completed with my 300 unit with the HF milling head.
